39 Weeks Pregnant with Twins

Joe Rawlinson by Joe Rawlinson - Last updated October 16, 2019

Here’s what to expect when you are 39 weeks pregnant with twins:

Fetal Development

By 39 weeks in the twin pregnancy each of your twins will average the following measurements:

Head circumference: 13.75″ (349 mm)
Abdominal Circumference: 13.75″ (349 mm)
Femur Bone Length (about from the waist to knee): 2.9″ (74 mm)

What to Expect

Typical weight gain for Mom at this point is about one pound per week (0.6kg).

Total weight gain for the twin pregnancy so far will average between 40 to 56 pounds (18.1 to 25.4kg).

If Your Twins Were Born This Week

Your twins are considered to term. They are typically born as healthy as their singleton counterparts. Twins born during the 39th week average a hospital stay of about 5 days and normally go home with Mom when she leaves the hospital.

Mark B. had twins born at 39 weeks 3 days. No extra hospital time was needed.

What to Prepare This Week

When Mom is 39 weeks pregnant with twins, pray they arrive soon and healthy. All of your focus now should be on your babies and Mom. Preparations at home should be complete. You’re just waiting for the trip to the hospital.

Dad’s Thoughts

By the time Mom reaches 39 weeks pregnant with twins, you are in disbelief that they still fit inside her. Every little grunt or groan from your wife (although she’s been doing that for weeks now) makes you think that this is finally the time. The twins are almost here.
