This question comes from Carlos. He says he has almost 1-year-old twin girls and he asks, “When I’m alone, how would I bathe them and put them to bed at the same time? Or is it better to do them separately?”
Carlos, I always recommend that you try to keep your twins on the same schedule. So you’ll definitely want to try to get them to bed at the same time.
Bathing Twins Separately
When our twins were younger and I was alone with them for the bedtime routine, I tried both ways. I bathed our girls together and I also bathed them separately and it really depended on how old they were. When our twins were very young, I’d bathe them one at a time. I’d keep the non-bathing twin in a bouncy seat or sitting by me outside of the bath tub while I washed her sister and got her cleaned up. When it would come time to dry one of the twins off, I would make sure that I didn’t leave the bathroom. So I’d take one twin out of the tub, dry her off, get her dressed in her pajamas, and then I put her in the bouncy seat or sit her on the floor and she could play with some toys while I would wash up her sister. You definitely don’t want to leave any of your children unattended in the bathroom, particularly when they’re very young and particularly when there’s water in the bathtub.
Bathing Twins Together
Now as your girls are almost 1 year old, you should be able to bathe them at the same time. The trick is that you have to keep your eye on both of them while they are in the bathtub. Little kids are extremely slippery when wet and you don’t want one of them slipping under the water and having trouble. When I would bathe our girls together, at the end of bath time after we got them all cleaned up, I would drain the tub while the twins were still in it to help make it easy to get them out and dry them off without having any extra slipping or underwater episodes.
So definitely try to bathe your twins around the same time. It could be back to back or if you really think that’s too much, maybe you could do one twin today and the next twin tomorrow, but definitely try to get them bathed at around the same time of day and then help get them down at the same time at night so they stay on the same schedule.
